Overview

Balancing environmental sustainability and promoting economic growth and good jobs will not be optional for Asia’s future growth. In fact, prospects for heightened human insecurity, unmet aspirations, and a more turbulent future at large is what governments across Asia must be prepared for, according to the latest report on human development by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UN agency argues that to chart a new course, governments need to be able to anticipate potential challenges, adapt to new information or shifting priorities, and respond to new data or events with agility. Each country will arrive at its own strategies tailored to national and local circumstances, but the secret to success going forward will lie in the combination of the ingredients.

The Asia Program hosted a conversation with Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, in order to address what growth model the Asia and Pacific region should pursue to achieve quality economic development.
